“Someday when I’m dead I’ll look back on all” by Gale Acuff

Someday when I’m dead I’ll look back on all
this from the future or Eternity
is what it might be and wonder how I
made it through life but suddenly remem
-ber that I didn’t–I’ll be dead and if
alive somehow I don’t think it will be
the same as a life of tacos and orange
Nehi and baseball and winter sledding
and TV and pizza buffets and fairs
and circuses and comic books and fighting
with my friends and getting beat up but then
they’re helping me to my feet and we shake
hands and the last damn thing we care about
is God but having something cold to drink
and copying one another’s homework.

Gale Acuff has had hundreds of poems published in a dozen countries and has authored three books of poetry. He has taught tertiary English courses in the US, PR China, and Palestine.
