PRINT MAGAZINE

From September 16 until December 1, 2016, we will be accepting submissions for our 2016 print issue.

FICTION: Because your submission will be seen by numerous readers and editors, our tastes are eclectic. However, every reader and editor has one thing in common—we are looking for stories that entertain. Whether your story is hilarious, gripping, or gut-wrenching, we want you to draw us in immediately and force us to read to the final line. Everything else, really, is just formatting. Formatting: We accept fiction up to 3,000 words and only accept one submission per writer per reading period. Submissions should be one short story or up to three flash pieces each under 750 words. Novel excerpts are OK if self-contained. Stories that contain visuals or art are welcome as long as you own the copyrights. However, we reserve the right to accept stories with or without accepting the art. Please include word count at the top of your manuscript. We also ask that you use standard manuscript formatting for fonts, margins, and spacing. Finally, remember to remove your name and other identifying information from all manuscript pages. We will only consider previously unpublished work. Simultaneous submissions are encouraged, but please remember to withdraw your piece and let us know if it has been accepted elsewhere.

NONFICTION: We are looking for essays that hold our attention; essays that are particularly captivating and descriptive; essays that are written in such a way that readers are moved or affected by the writer’s voice; essays that leave us with that Formatting: We accept nonfiction up to 3,500 words and only accept one submission per writer per reading period. Submissions should be one short essay (in any form) or up to three pieces each under 750 words. Essays that contain visuals or art are welcome as long as you own the copyrights. However, we reserve the right to accept stories with or without accepting the art. Please include word count at the top of your manuscript. We also ask that you use standard manuscript formatting for fonts, margins, and spacing. Thin Air reads blind, so please make sure that your manuscript does not contain any identifying information.

POETRY: At Thin Air, we’re looking for poems that resonate with readers by vibrating along their own emotional frequency. Send us poems that sing their own song, whether through strong imagery, sensory detail, a moving progression, intensive attention to language, or a combination of all these. Send us poems that, when we’re finished reading them, make us look up from the page, eyes unfocused. Send us poems that sate our appetite for poetry. More than anything, send us poems that you want to read. Feel free to check out our previous publications in poetry for an idea of what we like. Thanks for submitting, and good luck! Formatting: We accept up to 3 poems per submission. Include these all in one file, with a maximum of 5 pages per overall submission. We only accept one submission per writer per reading period. Please use standard manuscript formatting for fonts and text size, i.e. Times New Roman, 12 point. Thin Air reads blind, so please  remove your name and other identifying information from all manuscript pages. Cover letter and Bio optional and may be included through Submittable. Do not include on manuscript. We will only consider previously unpublished work. Simultaneous submissions are encouraged, but please remember to withdraw your piece and let us know if it has been accepted elsewhere.
VISUAL ART: We encourage original submissions of images of visual art in any medium, including multi-media/collage, photography, paintings, drawings, lithography, sculpture, and more. Submissions should be of excellent quality and aesthetic value, previously unpublished in a print publication. Please include a brief description of the artwork and a three-line artist bio. Fit images to a 1000 x 1000-pixel box and save to medium jpeg quality to keep the file sizes small. Do not send PDFs for image submissions. Submit up to five pieces for consideration.
